Franklin, TN - Carl Ed Childress, 86, of Franklin died Jan. 16, 2026.
Born on Nov. 6, 1939, in Ethridge, he was a man of integrity, warmth and dedication, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. He graduated from Vanderbilt University where he enjoyed and thrived at baseball. His life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family, his country and his community. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, a testament to his patriotism and sense of duty. Following his military service, he built a distinguished career as a civil engineer with Dee Shoring Company, where his expertise and work ethic were highly respected by his colleagues. Beyond his professional achievements, he was an active member of his community, contributing his time and talents to various organizations. He was a faithful member of the Glenn Allen Church of Christ in Richmond, Va., and then Franklin Road Church of Christ in Franklin, and dedicated himself to serving others through the Twelve Baskets Outreach Ministry. Those who knew him will remember him for his love of the outdoors. He found joy in jogging, a hobby that kept him fit and connected to nature. His pastime was being on his tractor, cutting wood and enjoying his mini farm; it was a reflection of his love for hard work and the satisfaction of a job well done. He is preceded in death by loving parents, Roy and Stella Mae Bryan Childress; and cherished wife Burnice Gwendolyn Fleming Childress.
Graveside services with full military honors were held Feb. 7 at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens with Zack Ford officiating.
Neal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include daughter Carla Childress Sisson (Steve) of Franklin; son Jason Childress (Holly) of Franklin; grandchildren, Victoria Sisson, Jack Sisson (Sara-Grace), Ruth Childress, Elizabeth Childress, Isaac Childress, Moses Childress, Joshua Childress, who will miss their grandfather's guidance and gentle spirit; and siblings, Richard Childress, David Childress, Nancy Hendrix, who will miss his guidance and companionship. His memory will be forever held in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
